FAQ
Q. What kind of rehabilitation is possible? What are the specific menus and their effects?
It’s possible to approach higher brain function disorders and motor function disorders. For higher brain function disorders, we have contents that can be used for attention disorders, hemispatial neglect, executive function disorders, disorientation, spatial cognitive disorders, etc. For motor function disorders, we have contents for balance disorders, upper limb motor disorders, walking disorders, etc. Since we also have contents that combine walking and cognitive tasks, dual tasks of motor and cognitive functions can be easily performed. The devices used in “Rehamaru” are see-through, so there is almost no increase in fall risk.
Q. Will using MR make you feel sick?
So far we have had various patients use it but there have been no negative opinions such as ‘feeling sick’ or ‘don’t want to wear it anymore.’ No incidents or accidents including falls have occurred in facilities.
Q. What kind of patients can use it? (Are there patients who cannot use it?)
There is a wide range of contents, and detailed parameter settings are possible for each program. As a result, there are almost no restrictions on target patients, and it can be widely used by patients with various severity levels of cerebrovascular diseases, orthopedic diseases, neurological diseases, etc. Operation methods can be selected from “touch,” “eye tracking,” and “head tracking,” and contents that respond by voice are also available. It can be used not only in standing and sitting positions, but also at the bedside. For contents involving exercise, tasks can be performed with therapist assistance, allowing various movements to be carried out while minimizing fall risk.
Q. What types of facilities have adopted your system?
Our system has been introduced to various facilities including acute care hospitals, rehabilitation hospitals, university hospitals including research institutions, and schools for educational purposes. Clinical therapists use our system in various ways (treatment/evaluation/research) according to their specific needs.
Q. Can it be customized for individual patients?
All contents can be finely customized for each patient, and therapists can freely create tasks according to the patient’s symptoms and rehabilitation objectives (e.g., Number task – number of balls, display range (angle), presence of secondary tasks, etc.; Volleyball – ball speed, range, hand usage, etc.).
Q. Is it difficult to use?
Preparation is complete simply by launching the app for each device. We provide preset menus according to the purposes of higher brain function disorders and motor function disorders, so difficulty settings can be easily adjusted using these presets.
Q. How does it differ from neuropsychological tests?
It enables evaluation of higher brain functions in three-dimensional space, which cannot be confirmed with paper-based tests. It can detect mild attention disorders and unilateral spatial neglect that are only visible during movement. In addition to performance scores, detailed data such as eye movement can be captured, and the patient’s viewed images can be reviewed with eye tracking, enabling qualitative evaluation.
Q. What are the advantages for therapists using this system?
For higher brain functions, it enables quantitative and qualitative evaluation in three-dimensional space that cannot be assessed on paper. For motor functions, detailed specification of movement range and hand usage is possible, making it easy to repeatedly train target movements. Since videos of the patient’s field of view during tasks can be recorded, smooth information sharing among PT/OT/ST staff and with doctors and nurses is possible. Cognitive and motor tasks can be performed simultaneously, enabling evaluation and training at levels closer to daily life, allowing for more efficient intervention toward discharge. Eye tracking functionality can be used to evaluate eye movements during walking or driving simulation.
Q. Are there benefits for patients using the system?
Due to its high game-like quality and enjoyable nature, patients can maintain motivation and perform sufficient amounts of rehabilitation. We receive many positive comments from elderly patients saying “it was fun.” Even patients with poor disease awareness can view first-person perspective videos of themselves during tasks, helping them understand their own symptoms.
Q. Are updates possible? (new content, etc.)
We plan to continuously add new content. Please feel free to consult with us if you have any requests.
Q. What kind of environment is ideal for use?
Locations with strong sunlight may make images difficult to see, but there are no other restrictions. The only required items are a head-mounted display, a laptop PC, and WiFi, so it can be used in various locations such as bedside, dining areas, and rehabilitation rooms. For content involving walking, care must be taken to ensure no obstacles are within the range, but the range can also be specified through parameters and adjusted according to the environment.
Q. What kind of data can be saved?
Various data can be saved and reviewed at any time, including the date and time when content was performed, task performance scores, videos of the patient’s field of view, eye movements, and head movements. With cloud synchronization, detailed eye movement records suitable for research use can also be viewed.
